Founders

Dr. Patrick Welton, Chief Executive Officer & Chief Investment Officer

Dr. Welton is Co-Founder of the firm and serves as the CEO and CIO. He has been an active investor for more than three decades, an investment manager since 1989, and actively contributes to the firm’s ongoing research. Dr. Welton has served on committees for the Managed Funds Association (MFA) and as a prior member of the Board of Directors of the National Futures Association (NFA). He speaks at numerous conferences globally every year, participates in panel presentations, and has authored numerous articles about alternative investments, macroeconomic impacts on markets, and investment theory. Dr. Welton serves as Chair of the Board of Montage Health and its subsidiaries and Chairs its pension and foundation investment committee. He serves as the Vice-Chair of the Panetta Institute of Public Policy where he also serves on its investment committee. In the late 1990’s, he Co-Founded Axios Data Analysis, one of the first large scale data analytics firms focused on healthcare data. His former research experience includes molecular biological work in gene sequencing, biophysics with a focus on positron emission neurofunctional brain imaging, and oncology through clinical cancer trials during a nearly 20 year period as Clinical Professor at Stanford University Hospital. He holds undergraduate, doctoral and postdoctoral degrees from the University of Wisconsin, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and Stanford University respectively.

Annette Welton, Co-Founder and Chair

aweltonMs. Welton is Co-Founder of the firm and serves as Chair of the Board of Directors. She oversees the Board of Directors, firm management, and engages in high-level industry relations. Ms. Welton served as Chief Operating Officer from 1988-2009. She has served on the Managed Funds Association Public Relations and Trading and Markets Committees, as well as on the National Futures Association (NFA) Nominating Committee. She was a Founder Director and served on the Board of Freedom Fields USA, an organization devoted to demining international areas of war torn conflict that has removed more than 60,000 land mines in multiple countries. Ms. Welton serves on the UCLA Foundation Board of Directors and Audit Committee. From 2013-2017 she was the Chair of the UCLA Foundation Finance Committee and a member of the Executive, Nominations and Governance, and Philanthropy committees. She holds a BS from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

Todd Merrell, CPA, CA, Chief Financial Officer

Mr. Merrell is responsible for all aspects of finance, middle- and back-office operations for Welton. This includes: corporate finance, fund accounting, fund administration, trade oversight, and investor reporting. Prior to joining Welton, Mr. Merrell was employed with JPMorgan Chase Hedge Fund Services in Bermuda and previously worked for Deloitte in Canada where he qualified as a Chartered Accountant (CA). Mr. Merrell holds memberships with the Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada (CPA Canada) in both Bermuda and Saskatchewan. He earned a Master of Professional Accounting degree and a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Finance from the University of Saskatchewan. Joined in 2009.

Christopher Keenan, Director of Marketing

Mr. Keenan manages marketing initiatives. He formerly worked in investment banking as a Senior Associate with Bear Stearns and as a Senior Financial Analyst with Intel’s corporate venture group, Intel Capital. Mr. Keenan holds an MBA from Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Business and a BA from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Joined in 2002.

Sebastian E. ``Sam`` Cassetta, Managing Director, International

Mr. Cassetta is responsible for leading Welton’s international business development initiatives including the maintenance of its third-party marketing relationships within Asia, Australia, Europe and Latin America. Prior to Welton he was a Managing Director at Miller Howard Investments responsible for international strategic business development and global expansion strategy which included the creation of a Luxembourg- based SICAV and two UCITS sub- funds. Mr. Cassetta is a former Managing Partner of Singer Partners LLC, an asset management firm formed in partnership with Brian Singer, the former Chief Investment Officer of UBS Global Asset Management, and Senior Managing Director of The Barington Capital Group L.P. Appointed by President Ronald Reagan and Department of Commerce Secretary Malcolm Baldridge, he served on both the U.S. Export Council (CT) and The Industry Sector Advisory Committee (ISAC) regarding GATT (Tokyo round) negotiations. In 2011, Mr. Cassetta was awarded the ”Distinguished Alumni Award” by the University of Denver and currently serves as a member of the Board of Advisors of the Reiman School of Finance at DU’s Daniels School of Business. Joined in 2019.

Basil Williams, President

Mr. Williams is a member of Welton’s senior leadership team managing the overall business, including oversight of the firm’s investment products, operations, and growth initiatives. Based out of Welton’s New York office, Mr. Williams possesses deep general management experience as a 30+ year industry leader in investment management. He is a proven investor in alternative strategies having traded a broad suite of relative value strategies during his 20 years at Concordia Advisors. Moreover, he possesses C-suite experience having built and led hedge fund businesses at Concordia and Mariner Investment Group. Prior to joining Welton, Mr. Williams was the Head of Portfolio Management at PAAMCO, one of the largest alternative allocators and emerging manager investors. He has been a regular speaker at industry conferences, and authored articles on topics ranging from monetary policy, risk management, technology and hedge fund management. Mr. Williams’ not-for-profit service includes President of the Board of Elisabeth Morrow School, Finance Committee Member of the Dwight Englewood School, and Trustee of the Portsmouth Abbey School. He earned an MBA from the NYU Stern School of Business, and a BA in Applied Mathematics (Summa Cum Laude) from Brown University. Joined in 2019.

Guillaume Detrait, Chief Operating Officer & Chief Enterprise Risk Office

Mr. Detrait is responsible for overseeing the overall operations of the firm, chairs the Business Planning Committee, helps each department adopt sound business practices and seeks to mitigate all major business risks. Previously he was a Vice President at HSBC and a Senior Business Manager at Capital One. He began his career with KPMG where he served as an audit manager to the firm’s Paris and Los Angeles practices. Mr. Detrait holds an MBA from Columbia Business School and a BS from ESC Reims in France. Joined in 2008.

David Nowlin, CRCP, Chief Compliance Officer

Mr. Nowlin oversees compliance, legal and internal departmental reviews. Previously, he worked as an Associate with the firms formerly known as Price Waterhouse and Dean Witter Reynolds. Mr. Nowlin successfully completed the FINRA® Institute at Wharton Certified Regulatory and Compliance Professional (CRCP) program. Mr. Nowlin earned an MBA from Santa Clara University and a BA from Westmont College. Joined in 1993.

Neal J. Howe, Director of Investor Solutions

Mr. Howe leads the Investor Solutions team overseeing the new business development effort for all of Welton’s strategies, and working closely with investors to develop the most optimal solutions designed to meet their return objectives. Previously he was Managing Director and Head of Distribution for Barclays Funds and Advisory. Mr. Howe has also worked with Merrill Lynch, Schroders and Lazard in senior Distribution roles. He holds a BS from Indiana University. Joined in 2015.
